The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 6 - 10, 1957



Sunday, January 6, 1957

Fair and cloudy in p.m., very cold again. Dennis Chadbourne and Lloyd called in a.m. Bob and Kennard in p.m. Did up the work, got dinner, wrote letters. Betty to church. Billie worked for Dennis.



Monday, January 7, 1957

Snowed hard all day. I washed. Bill plowed out the driveway. Billie worked for Dennis. Today I got a very nice letter from Joe Adams, Dorothea’s boyfriend. Also one from Dorothea. Mama got cold again.



Tuesday, January 8, 1957

I got the clothes in and ironed.



Wednesday, January 9, 1957

A nice day. I did up the work. Mama in bed today with a cold. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called in p.m. Betty down to Stephanie Burnell’s for choir rehearsal. I cooked today. Billie worked with Dennis.



Thursday, January 10, 1957

A big storm snowed hard all day. Mama had the doctor today. He gave her penicillin for a bad cold. Billie worked with Dennis shoveling off roofs at Redfields. Also shoveled here. Donnie sick tonight.
