The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, January 1, 1957 Cold Cold

A nice day but awful cold. Billie worked for Dennis in p.m. Bill went to work at 4: 30, couldn’t start his car. Had to be pushed. Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os came up, Lloyd helped him to start car. In evening we got a telephone call from Dorothea from California. Talked with Joe too. A good New Year’s gift.



Wednesday, January 2, 1957 Cold Cold

A very nice day but awful cold, 20 below this morning. I did up the work, got the clothes in and ironed today. Billie worked for Dennis today. Bill didn’t go tonight till 10:30. Betty got her watch from jeweler today. Edith McAllister called this p.m. Betty went to choir rehearsal. Bobby Smart called in evening.



Thursday, January 3, 1957

Not quite so cold. I cooked. Did up the regular work.



Friday, January 4, 1957

I didn’t do much today. Bill sleeping. It evening I went down with Bill to get gas. Billie worked for Dennis. Not so cold. Went to town and got Dorothea’s box off.



Saturday, January 5, 1957

A nice day. I cooked, cleaned up the house. Bill slept all day. Betty slept till noon. Mama and Donnie slept till late. I shampooed my hair and took bath in p.m. After supper went to town.
