The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 6 - 10, 1956



Thursday, December 6, 1956

A rainy, foggy day, cold and icy in morning. No school. Betty decorated the house for Christmas, looks very nice. Bill likes his new job. Raymond came home today from Lahey Clinic. Gordon called in a.m.



Friday, December 7, 1956

Another cloudy foggy day. Bill slept more today. In PM went to town. Dolores called the p.m. I cleaned up the house today, cooked some. Hams and bacon came back today. Betty sick last night. To school today and dance tonight.



Saturday, December 8, 1956

A fair day, quite warm. Dot and Lorraine called this a.m. Bill fixed car. In p.m. we went to town. I churned. My check came today from Mr. Ayers.



Sunday, December 9, 1956

A stormy day. I made corn balls and two kinds of fudge for Dorothea. Also got it packed with her evening gowns and jewelry set. Also today Blanche came over and cut Mama’s hair, also put Betty’s up in curlers. Snowed a lot today. Billie helped Dennis and did Raymond’s chores tonight.



Monday, December 10, 1956

A nice day. In AM we went to town and got Dorothea’s box off, also got gifts and got off to her roommate, came home. Raymond here talked a while and then in p.m. I washed. Betty and Holly went and got Christmas trees. Betty got hers decorated. Holly here for supper. Bill didn’t work tonight. A small fire at mill.
