The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 11 - 14, 1957 30 Degrees Below Zero



Friday, January 11, 1957 10° Below

A nice day but awful cold. I defrosted refrigerator. Mama a little better. Billie shoveled out the driveway again after drifting last night. Donnie okay today.



Saturday, January 12, 1957

A nice day. I cooked and done up the work. My check came today. For two months $200. Went to town in p.m. Got Betty a new skirt and two sweaters today. Mama not too good. Billie worked for Raymond hauling hen dressing.



Sunday, January 13, 1957

Windy. And got awful cold today. I done up the work, wrapped up skates for Betty Smith to send her. I wrote letters. Kay Fleck up here today, Bob Smith called. Mama a little better.



Monday, January 14, 1957 Cold

30 below here this morning, 42 below downtown. I washed. Cars wouldn’t start. Ilan got his started and came down, pushed Bill and got his to going. Then they got Billies started. Bill took me downtown. I got some letters off and a package to Betty Smith.
