The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

It was a very nice day. I washed.



Friday, November 16, 1956

A cloudy day. I cleaned up the house etc. Mama came home from Fern’s. After Bill got home he and I with Donnie went to town to pay some bills and to see about electric stove at Bud Lowell’s.



Saturday, November 17, 1956

A nice day. In a.m. I went to Norway with Delores to see about a job over to McKeen’s nursing home. Saw Osma Abbott, he is pretty good. In PM I cooked, churned,washed kitchen floor and did housework. In late p.m. went to town. Got a check from Lida today for Don clothes $30. Bud Lowell brought up the end heater. Bob and Kennie got a deer today. Bob and Blanche called in eve. Terri here tonight. Rosalie and Holly called in a.m.



Sunday, November 18, 1956

Cloudy and snow in forenoon, cleared in p.m. No one here all day. Betty to church and S. S. Terri here to go with her. Lloyd killed his hens today. Billie helped him in forenoon. Bill helped in p.m. Called on Pete and Edith tonight.
