The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 15 -19, 1956



Saturday, December 15, 1956

Cloudy all day. Bill, Betty and I went to Portland today to do some Christmas shopping. Didn’t do much. Mama and Donnie home alone. Mama some better. We wrapped some gifts tonight. I looked at the desks in Sears today, they are nice.



Sunday, December 16, 1956

Foggy most of the day. I did up the work. Kennard down in a.m., he put his ham in our deep-freeze. Betty to church. Billie over to Raymond’s. I wrote letters in p.m. Betty put puzzle together. Billie over to Raymond’s. Billie to Portland with Dennis to haul load of wood down to guy.



Monday, December 17, 1956

I washed. In PM I washed curtains in dining room. Billie finished at Chet’s today.



Tuesday, December 18, 1956

A clear cold day. Linwood came up and cleaned out the oil burner and furnace. Ironed the p.m. Billie worked with Dennis today. Got a package from Dorothea today.



Wednesday, December 19, 1956

Not so cold. Mama and Donnie got a cold.
