The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 27 - 31, 1956



Saturday, October 27, 1956

Fair, some cloudy, not so cold. Delores called this forenoon. Bill home at noon. Fixed brakes on his car. Betty to football game first one she ever went to 41 Bridgton 4 Livermore Falls. Got a letter from Dorothea today.



Sunday, October 28, 1956

A very nice day. Betty down to ride old Fan with Kennie Whitney and his sister. I spent the afternoon with Dolores. Billie worked around home, hauled out rest of dressing in p.m. Bill worked at Lloyds.



Monday, October 29, 1956

I washed, ironed and cooked. A very nice day. I washed on the porch for the first time this fall. I churned. War began in Egypt.



Tuesday, October 30, 1956

I went downtown with Dolores to get pills for Bill. He is a little lame. We called at Flossie’s. In PM, I got ready to go away next day. Things quite serious – Great Britain and France joined forces.



Wednesday, October 31, 1956

A very nice day. I went up and spent the day with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. In evening Bill and I took Kennard and Dolores to Portland to take the train to New York to visit Carlton and family. Betty downtown tonight for Halloween. War new is very serious.
