The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 1 - 4, 1956



Thursday, November 1, 1956

First day of hunting. It rained. Bill hunted all day. Jerry Bishop and his son Larry called with two nice deer each one got this morning. Billie home about noon. He and I got the hen house ready for a new pullets. I got Dorothea’s box off today.



Friday, November 2, 1956

Cloudy in forenoon, cleared in p.m. and cooler. I cooked, cleaned up the house. Holly down after school. Betty stopped up to Kennard’s and fed Yum Yum.





Saturday, November 3, 1956

Betty and Kay to ballgame. A very nice day. Bill worked all day. I didn’t have much to do today. We got a very nice interesting cheerful happy letter from Dorothea today. To town tonight. Brought the pig home tonight. Betty to school dance. Billie brought a white pullet home tonight.



Sunday, November 4, 1956 Got Pullets and Pig


Another very nice day. Busy all day taking care of salt pork, lard, washed storm windows. Billie put them on. Bill worked with Lloyd at the camps. Betty to church. This morning Bill and Lloyd went after the pullets over to Lovell Joe True’s got 20 at $2. Billie got a pig up to Chet’s.
