The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 25 - 27, 1985

Wednesday, September 25, 1985

Mostly sunny, on the coolish side. Well I made a spice cake, got some vegetables ready for supper. Also got the chicken ready to bake for supper. I got some English muffins for supper, a very good one. I went to the bank with Betty. Also I got a few things at the store.

Thursday, September 26, 1985 a nice sunny day

I done a ironing. I done up the work, I washed. About noon time Carmen came and brought her lunch. She and Billie ate together. Betty came, had a chicken sandwich. Dorothea called but she you won’t eat. We all went over to the CKE junction home. Dorothea fell in love with it. Then she and I went to Norway to shop. Carmen was suffering so with asthma problems, she couldn’t work to fix up the barn. Cassie is better, but Eddie isn’t very good. I’m worried about him. Betty been busy all day.

Friday, September 27, 1985 HURRICANE GLORIA, EDDIE HOME FROM HOSPITAL

I talked with Eddie this morning. He said he was better and going home with Kim tonight when she goes home from work. I hope he will be better. I’ve been busy all day canning tomatoes and made a apple pie. We have been listening to all hurricane reports all day. It is going to be bad. Milan had a tree come down in his yard.
