The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 2 - 4, 1985 Aunt Delores to the Hospital

 

Wednesday, October 2, 1985 HOUSE-WINTERIZED

 

Cloudy and foggy then in PM it rained. Today there was a couple young guys came and winterized the house. Put new insulation upstairs. Fixed all windows, around all doors, taped the hot water pipe down cellar. Milan to the hospital for his checkup today. His tiredness and all is caused from his treatment last summer. He, Betty and I up to Dorothea and Dave’s this evening. They was out for the day and at Jeff’s. They enjoyed the day by themselves. In late evening Betty H, Dorothea and I up to Delores’s. They got her put to bed. She is bad off. Brud is coming tomorrow.

 

 

 

Thursday, October 3, 1985 DELORES TO NCM HOSPITAL

 

Bill to the doctors today, his report came back good. Carmen took him. I made jelly and a pudding. Dorothea and Dave to Fryeburg Fair. They had a good time getting out by themselves. Brud came, they took Delores to NCM hospital. A bad case of shingles. A very sick person.

 

 

 

Friday, October 4, 1985 got potatoes and beans

 

A cloudy showery day. Billie and I over to Norway to grocery shop then down to Standish and got the beans and potatoes. I did up the work. Kim home today. Carmen called, they worked on her house today. I cooked supper after I got home, it was late. David down today or this morning for coffee.
