The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 11 - 13, 1985

 

Wednesday, September 11, 1985 HOUSECLEANING AT THE C. R. E. JUNCTION HOME

 

A cold partly cloudy and sunny day. Up early, got the work done up. Got ready to go to C. R. E. junction home of Carmen’s to clean. Betty Smith went with us. We done a lot over there. Betty did a thorough (good) job in the attic and shed chamber. Betty S and I got most of the pantry done. Carmen helped Betty and worked downstairs a lot. It looked very good thus far. Milan and Billie were visitors at the new home. This morning Eddie and Kim here for breakfast. Billie went up to see about the pullets.

 


 

 

Thursday, September 12, 1985 BILL HOME FROM HOSPITAL AGAIN

 

Bill out of the hospital today and to Portland for examination. He came home tonight, he is weak but doing okay. Dorothea, Betty S and I went. We went out to Jeff’s new home at PINE POINT ON THE SEA, BEAUTIFUL. Bill went out with us, it is very pretty and he has a nice place to live. He was ready to go to work, he looked very nice. All dressed up. Betty Smith enjoyed the trip. Betty and Carmen back over to work today at Carmen’s house. A pretty good day. Bill is pretty good. Kim to a seminar meeting in Portland today with her boss and others from the nursing home.

 

 

 

Friday, September 13, 1985

 

A nice day, much warmer. I done up the work, washed. Dorothea came, she and I went shopping downtown. I watched some of the TV shows.
