The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 15 - 18, 1985 Zak gets job at Tarry-A-While

 

Thursday, August 15, 1985 BAD SHOWERS

 

Another very hot day. I defrosted refrigerator on porch. We had corn for supper. Billie mowing lawns all day or nearly. Came in the PM and stayed in the house was shades drawn and fan going, also all outside doors closed. It was so humid as it was yesterday. Tom and Charlene called. Kim and Eddie up to camp also Betty was up there. Eddie out looking for job, he was up to Howell Labs. We had a bad shower today or early evening.

 

 

 

Friday, August 16, 1985  Zack has a job at Tarry- a -While

 

Much cooler. A very nice day. I did a wash, vacuumed, went to town with Betty. Did grocery shopping. Billie trimmed lawns and worked all day. Betty and Milan’s company left this morning. They are quite relieve, it was so hard for them both as they have been under so much pressure since they got here. Also Milan going to Portland for those treatments. Betty took them over to show them the new house which Carmen is trying to buy. Today Zack hired out at Tarry- a- while for the last two weeks of the season.

 

 

 

Saturday, August 17, 1985 WALT AND CARMEN GOT THE HOUSE

 

Another nice sunny day. No humidity. Carmen stayed up to camp last night. I done up work, washed floors, made rolls, baked red kidney beans. They want at all good. Carmen up. Betty called. Billie busy all day.

 

 


 

Sunday, August 18, 1985

 

A nice sunny day. I didn’t get up very early. Betty, Walt came Milan, Betty also Carmen came and Eddie and Kim. Zack stayed up to - a -while tonight. Billie and I picked the rest of the string beans, shell beans. I did those and froze them. Thena, Malcolm and Audrey called tonight.
