The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 17 - 20, 1985

Another very nice sunny day. On the mild side. I got up early, got the work done up. Got ready to go to the CKE junction home. Betty Smith, Betty H, Carmen and I. We got along just fine, got all cleaned to the kitchen. We got Kim’s room all done. It looks very nice and the bathroom and backhall. Betty Smith painted the cupboards in the pantry. She done a great job, they look so nice. Also Carmen did some work in there. Also Carmen painted the bedroom floor second coat. Milan and Betty called.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 18, 1985

 

I didn’t go to the CKE junction home. Betty and Carmen went. They did a lot in the kitchen, it looks so nice. I made mincemeat, canned tomatoes, cooked some roast spareribs for Betty, myself and a roast beef. Billie been very busy all day. Zack to school half a day as school closed at noon, teacher’s workshop.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 19, 1985 HOT HOT, Zack sick

 

It has been very hot all day. I got the work done up. Milan came then we made his mincemeat. I did a wash. Cleaning things, rags and curtains. Bill and I took the door casing over to the CKE junction home. It is beautiful over there. Looks so nice. Billie mowed all the lawns today. Walt took Zack to the doctors over to Lewiston.

 

 

 

Friday, September 20, 1985 HOT AND HUMID

 

This is been another very hot and humid day. I been busy. I did a big washing. We went to Carmen’s. I went down to Betty’s to see Zack. He is sick with a bad kidney infection. I came home, got ready, went over to Carmen’s with Betty S and Betty H. Billie came and picked me up, we went to Shop and Save over to Norway. We rode over through Otisfield. Carmen and Betty worked over to the house. She has done such a nice job. They plan to move tomorrow.
