The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, October 22, 1985

 

A nice day. I did cleaning, my bedrooms and Billie’s. Billie out scouting around for hay. It is hard to find. It has been a very mild sunny day. Milan called. Bill been reading and to the doctors. Betty painting. This is Dorothea’s day off. Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of Wednesday and Thursday. Billie got two pumpkins.

 

 


 

Wednesday, October 23, 1985 NICE DAY

 

I did the bathroom and the living room. Kim and Carmen called. Billie did all the windows on the outside. Zack up this evening. Bill read most all day then he worked on the door steps. It is been a very HOT day. Betty, Walt and Carmen painted, Kim painted this PM.

 

Thursday, October 24, 1985

 

I started the kitchen today. Man came to fix Bill’s hearing aid. I went down to Betty’s this PM, got her meat to cooking, loaf bread, applesauce, onions and potatoes. She painted and got it all done. Carmen helped to also. Walt came home and worked on it. Billie out riding around looking for cattle etc.

 

 

 

Friday, October 25, 1985

 

A very nice sunny day. I done up my work. Got ready and went to Norway with Betty, Carmen and Kim. We went with Kim to pick out the wedding dress. They all are very pretty and she looked like a princess in it. She made her choice. Then we went grocery shopping. When we got home we all pitched in and made Betty’s applesauce. Zack to coming home party tonight for the Lake Region High School. He had a good time.
