The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, May 3, 1970

Cloudy, showers in the early morning. I cleaned the radiators. Billie moved out electric stove. I cleaned behind that. Thomas family up for supper. Dorothea down to see Aunt Ava. She seems a dite better.

Monday, May 4, 1970

A nice day, warm and sunny. I washed. Billie didn’t work. He hauled some hen dressing for the garden. I cleaned my china cabinet. Had a nice mess of smelts tonight for supper.

Tuesday, May 5, 1970

Warm in early part of day. It got cold towards night. I went down to Betty’s, we went down to Dorothea’s. Betty brought the pool up to set up in their backyard. I did a dite of cleaning in p.m. In evening Billie and I raked leaves over to Aunt Ava’s. Ilan called in evening. Betty cleaned in her den.

Wednesday, May 6, 1970 Aunt Ava’s 81st birthday

Rain showers in the early morning. Cloudy, windy and very cold rest of the day. Very cold tonight. We had a bad dry thunder shower last night. Walt lost his furnace, it got cut off by lightning. Ervin Linscott lost a cow. It was a bad shower. Betty and kids up here because they didn’t have any heat. I cleaned draws, cupboards and bedroom, bathroom and living room. Betty helped Fern cleaned her dining room.
