The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 11 - 14, 1970

Monday, May 11, 1970 BAD SHOWER

A very nice day, very hot. I cleaned in the sitting room. I washed. I went over to Aunt Ava’s. Betty to get the stereo Aunt Ava gave her. We helped her some. In evening Bill and I called. She gave him the old fashion Edison phonograph. In evening we had a very bad thundershower. It was a dry one, all over it came in on our wiring. Very bad. Betty cleaned her living room. Bill took me to South Paris. I got my living room curtains.

Tuesday, May 12, 1970

A nice sunny day. Not so hot. I finished my living room. Betty did her dining room. Kim came up. I went over to Aunt Ava’s in forenoon. She had Arnold Lane there to fix her well. Gordon up all p.m. He and Bill worked on the wiring after it went out from the awful shower last night. Betty and I called at Fern’s in evening. Also on Aunt Ava.

Wednesday, May 13, 1970

A cloudy day. I went down to Betty’s. We cleaned in her kitchen. Got a lot of it done. I cleaned dandelions for supper. They were very good. Betty had some too. Kim up with Bill most all day. We was so glad to get most of Bet’s kitchen done. Didn’t call on Aunt Ava tonight.

Thursday, May 14, 1970 MOWED LAWNS

A very nice day. I finished my kitchen. It looks real good. Betty finished hers also. Her house looks so nice and clean all over. I’m so glad she is all done. She done very well with the family, to get meals for baby and helping Aunt Ava etc. Bill mowed our lawns for first time today, also Betty’s. Billie did the trimming. It looks so nice around our house
