The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 17 - 20, 1970




Friday, April 17, 1970 Apollo 13 crew got back safe

Partly cloudy. More clear in p.m. I done up work. To town with Betty, did grocery shopping. Made last bank payment. Kim stayed up in PM. Apollo crew 13 got back all safe and sound. Watched it on colored TV. Aunt Ava lamed.



Saturday, April 18, 1970 Windy

A beautiful day. Billie out looking for cattle. Lloyd went with him. In p.m. Billie and I over to Auburn to see about some cattle. I called at Betty’s. WALT HAIR CUT. Also Walt up to Augusta and took exams. Bill got a post ready for mailbox.



Sunday, April 19, 1970

A nice sunny day but awful windy. Bill worked on mailbox and got it up. Billie went with Lawrence to find beef cattle. Can’t find anything. Hortons gone down to Walt’s folks up to Attleboro Massachusetts. In p.m. Bill and I called at Dorothea and Dave’s. Aunt Ava still very lame.



Monday, April 20, 1970

Cloudy. I done regular work. Ironed the sheets and pillow cases. Made a pudding, cooked a boiled dinner. Aunt Ava over to Dr. Ruby’s. Lloyd drove her. I went with them. She is quite bad. Betty and family got here at about 5 PM. Had supper and left for home at about seven.
