The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 29 - May 2, 1970 New Car


Wednesday, April 29, 1970

Aunt Ava been in hospital a week today. Fern, Betty and I called to see her tonight. She is a lot better tonight than last night. Betty and I cleaned up over to Aunt Ava’s house some. In p.m. I cleaned some cupboards. Betty cleaned Carmen’s room. She slept upstairs tonight.



Thursday, April 30, 1970

I helped Betty move some furniture upstairs. She got Kim’s room done. I did my kitchen draws and some cupboards. We went down to the hospital to see Aunt Ava tonight. She is pretty good. Had a lot of company today. Kim slept upstairs tonight. Billie finished raking up outside. It looks a lot better.



Friday, May 1, 1970 CATTLE – HOT- Volkswagen

It has been a very hot day, 90°. Betty and I cleaned my cupboards. We went to town in p.m. Bill’s car went to pieces, fuel pump. A fire at the dump, town crew fighting it. Bill late getting home. Billie got two very nice beef cattle tonight, Durham steers. Walt came home in a brand-new Volkswagen. Betty and Walt called to see Aunt Ava today. Took old gun of Uncle Lewis to Guy Monk. Got a car seat for Zak.



Saturday, May 2, 1970

I baked beans. Fern up for supper. Billie worked for Lawrence. I washed, cleaned up the kitchen and breezeway. Down to Betty’s. Hot. Went for a ride in the Volkswagen. I cleaned behind washer and did refrigerator.
