The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, May 19, 1970 BRAND-NEW LAWNMOWER

Billie came home tonight, he has bought a brand-new lawnmower at Twitchell’s over to Oxford. It will come tomorrow night. Cloudy all forenoon. Betty and I down town. Called at Aunt Ava’s. Kids came up before supper, they brought me some white trilliums. Zak has a new tooth. I washed tonight after supper.

Wednesday, May 20, 1970 LAWNMOWER

The new lawnmower came tonight. They all like it very much. It does such good work. Betty, Walt and kids came up to see it. Betty and I sat her flowers out today. I cleaned the breezeway. It cleared off and was so hot.

Thursday, May 21, 1970

A beautiful day. We picked greens at Betty’s. She mowed all her lawns with the new mower. We each froze greens. Went to Norway in p.m. Had car trouble. She had to go to Ripley Fletcher. We came back as soon as they got the car fixed. Bill and Billie finished mowing the lawns. We liked the new mower.

Friday, May 22, 1970 HOT

A nice day. I washed. I went over to Aunt Ava’s and cleaned her house up for her. Came home, did a few odds and end jobs, got some greens for supper. Billie home tonight until June 1, one week of his three weeks vacation. Bill and I to town after supper. Came home, left some things that Betty’s she wanted me to get for her. Kids wanted us to stop.
