The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 3 - 6, 1957



Tuesday, September 3, 1957 Hot

I ironed. Did odd and ends. Betty up to Dawn most all day. Billie and I over to Raymonds to ground hamburger.



Wednesday, September 4, 1957 Hot, Betty began High School

Another hot day. I cooked. Betty began high school today. She was so late getting home tonight. Bill, Betty and I rode over to see (?) Saliba’s horse tonight.





Thursday, September 5, 1957

A nice day. I didn’t do much. Lloyd came up and cut up the meat. Fern and Uncle Os came too. Billie and I over to Raymond and ground the hamburg.



Friday, September 6, 1957 Talked with Dorothea tonight

A good day. I cooked, cleaned up the house, downtown before supper. Dolores called this morning. Kay came up here to stay all night. In evening Bill, Kay and Betty over to see the horse. He got kicked and hurt very badly. Had to go to the doctors. Not going to get the horse now. Dorothea called tonight. Lorraine, Dot and children called. Karen and Wanda Jean.
