The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 26 - 29, 1957



Wednesday, June 26, 1957

Rain again. I cooked. Kay up here today. Also other kids. I ironed. Bill only worked in a.m. Betty and Kay walked down to choir rehearsal. Billie went with Dennis to move a tractor. Donnie very sick tonight.



Thursday, June 27, 1957

Another rainy day. Bill worked in a.m. In p.m., he and I with Fern and Uncle Os went to Mildred Chadbourne’s funeral at the North Bridgton church. Betty been home all day. I cleaned up the house. Donnie not much different. Billie away tonight. I worked at Mrs. Dearborn’s this p.m. while Bill was at home.



Friday, June 28, 1957

It cleared off in p.m. Very hot. I did regular work, went to town in p.m. after Bill got home. Bill worked all day. Donnie still sick.



Saturday, June 29, 1957

Rained awful hard in a.m. and heavy winds. Hurricane Audrey going up through here to Canada. I cooked, cleaned up the house. Donnie still sick. In p.m. Billie was home, he, Betty and I picked berries. Bill didn’t work in a.m. Milan and Betty came in p.m. Blanche and little girl called in p.m. In evening Stan Whitney’s family called. Betty babysitting tonight at Dick Carsleys.
