The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 21 - 25, 1957



Sunday, July 21, 1957

Cloudy, not too hot around here. In p.m. it rained some. Mrs. Parks and mother called. Kay here for dinner. Billie worked at Chet’s today haying. Let cows into oats today. Milan 38 today. Mama down to Rockway tonight for supper with Fern and Lloyd.



Monday, July 22, 1957

Rained hard. Bill went to work early this morning. But came home because of rain. Today got a check for $.25 for my addressing envelopes. Stevie up today. Hayd Smart got his foot hurt today. Clearing off in p.m.



Tuesday, July 23, 1957

A very nice cool and windy day. Dawn, David and I went over to Otisfield blueberrying. Got about 6 or 8 quarts piece. I washed early this morning.



Wednesday, July 24, 1957

A nice forenoon. In p.m., cloudy, cool and showers. I ironed most of day. A letter from Dorothea, also card and booklet of San Francisco. She and Lois has been up there to Hamilton A. F. B. Had a good time. She wrote a cheery letter. She would like to see the folks at home. She is on the homesick side. Bill worked over to Jim’s tonight.



Wednesday, July 25, 1957

A cool day, showers in p.m. Betty cooked in a.m. Stevie up here. I cleaned up the house. Donnie not good at all.
