The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 22 - 25, 1957 Betty off to Camp



Thursday, August 22, 1957

A very nice day. I cleaned up the house and washed. Bill finished putting the steel roofing on. Chet Haley called tonight, going to have a chimney put in the kitchen, a brand new one double bricked. Donnie real good today. Betty up to Dawn’s on a cookout. Billie and Chet haying at Dicks and Rothrocks. Dot, Lorraine and Wanda Jean and Karen Joyce called this p.m.



Friday, August 23, 1957

A nice hot day. I cleaned up the house, got ready in p.m. to go to town. We bought shoes, clothes and blanket for Betty. Betty mowed lawns and down to Dawn’s. She and Holly packed her suitcase today. Edith McAllister called in evening.



Saturday, August 24, 1957

A very nice day. Betty left this morning and went down to Kay’s to go to M. E. camp tomorrow. I cooked, cleaned up the house etc. Bill got his haircut tonight. Dry and hot. Billie got the liver today.



Sunday, August 25, 1957

Betty went to Methodist Church Camp today with Vicki Cushman and Kay Fleck at Winthrop, Maine for a week. Cloudy and rained a little this p.m. Billie home today, didn’t have to work. Fern, Lloyd took Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis and Uncle Os on a picnic.
