The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 12 - 14, 1992 Kim's Birthday

 

Sunday, April 12, 1992 Kim 26

 

Kim celebrated her birthday at her mother and fathers for her 26th. They had a nice supper for her. She got many nice gifts. Well today Billie gave Kim a $100 bill. Also he paid Walt 100 for all the trips when he was in the rehab hospital. He tried to get him to take it before but he wouldn’t. So that eased his mind. Today Carmen and Arnold hauled manure for the garden. Carmen took Bro down to Betty’s to stay tonight. Carmen got to work at the hospital tomorrow, got to be there at 7 AM. Still a lot of snow here.

This is a bright sunny morning. I done regular work. I did a small wash. I worked at the desk. Betty called in forenoon. She is coming to get the supper tonight. We had a delicious meal.

 

 

 

Tuesday, April 14, 1992

 

A quite nice day. I done up the regular work. It is cold until about middle of forenoon than it warmed up and the snow in the fields melted. Around the edges it is still here. Well today I made a birthday cake. Tonight Betty and Kim came and got the supper. Baked ham, lima beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, muffins etc. Cake and ice cream. Very good. Walt and Zak got home in time for supper. Been to Portland with Zak to see about him going to school etc. Kim’s birthday supper. Zak and Walt to Portland also checking on the school is to go to for his truck driving job. Zak back down to Portland again tonight for his pool meet.
