The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunny in morning. Clouded up middle of the day. Zak cleaned up the whole house. He took kitchen curtains down. I washed them and ironed them and put away. He put up the kitchen curtains. It looks good after he vacuumed and cleaned. He went to town. Carmen’s car didn’t start. Walt took Bro to school. Ervin Linscott’s funeral today.

Another one of those awful cold days. Walt up for coffee in the a.m. Then in p.m. they all came. They cooked such a very good boiled dinner. Dorothea, David, Carmen, Brogan, Zac, Betty and Walt, Billie and I. Betty and Carmen got the dinner. Dorothea helped with everything after she came. Betty fixed up a good dinner for Kim, Tom and Betty Smith. We worked on the puzzle.

Still very cold. Sunny in a.m. Clouded up in p.m. I did the washing. Zac put them away. I wrote to Esther and Phyllis. Zak downtown. Brud called today. Finished the puzzle, now we got to do the next one. Paid Zac today for his work. Carmen called in evening. She is not tiptop. I’m worried about her. Hope everything will be okay. This was a holiday. No school or mail. I worked on the puzzle, also Zac.
