The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Betty back to school today. Carmen called, she done my shopping. She heard an awful noise outside of her house last night. I worked at a desk all a.m. Made out the bills.

 

 

 

Thursday, January 30, 1992

 

Walt and Zac got home last night about 1:30. Had a good trip. They saw Betty at the school on their way home from New York. Dorothea called. She brought my cards (birthday). She had been to Lewiston with David to get his results of his test to take to Dr. Keith. Betty S and Dorothea done their shopping and to the bank. A quite nice day. Zak went and done the shopping.

 

 

 

Friday, January 31, 1992

 

A kind of cloudy day. A little sun now and then. The Portland Glass man came. He got to come again with a new window. Carmen called, had breakfast. Then she went down to her mother’s. Then down to get Brogan at school. Zak cleaned the house today.

 

 

 

Saturday, February 1, 1992

 

On the cloudy and snow flurries. Very windy. David came for coffee. I did a washing.
