The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, March 31, 1992

 

A partly cloudy day. Rained hard all forenoon. Some sun in p.m. Bro here most all forenoon. Then down to her Grammys. Carmen gone with Arnold to Portland to see about Nick. Did a big washing. Zac and I clean the draws and cupboards in the kitchen. Brogan here for a while. I did the ironing. Dorothea called this evening.

 

 

 

Wednesday, April 1, 1992

 

A nice sunny morning. It clouded up some during the day, some sun in p.m. I got the work done up. Then I cleaned the inside of the refrigerator. Betty dropped in for a minute. Carmen came, and got the grocery list and she took Brogan to school and did the grocery shopping for us. A friend of Brogan’s came to play with her, Megan King. Today Zak has been in Portland all day checking on jobs and a place to live etc. Didn’t have much good luck. Dorothea to the dentist today. Today a Paul Field Junior came to look at Billie’s tractor. He is going to buy it.

 

 

 

Thursday, April 2, 1992

 

It was kind of cloudy when we got up at 5:30. A dite of snow and rain but in an hour the sun broke through and it turned out to be a very nice sunny day. I cleaned out a couple draws at the desk. Carmen and Brogan called, Zak came at about 9:30. He cleaned the refrigerator and moved it out, also he cleaned the stove all around and inside. He did a good job. They looked very good then he went down to Betty’s.

 

 

 

Friday, April 3, 1992

 

A quite cold day. Carmen and Brogan called after Bro got home from school. Carmen got supper. She, Arnold and Brogan came up for supper. Zak cleaned the rest of the appliances today, washer and dryer. It looked very good. Also he clean up the house. Betty up to the shelter while they were up there working back and forth. I cleaned my desk drawers. Checks came today. Carmen to the bank etc. Jason Richardson called today. Field came to see about the tractor etc.,  kind of hitch etc. Got some outside work done.
