The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 16 - 19, 1992

 

Monday, March 16, 1992 No Electric power for about five hours

 

A very nice sunny day. I did a big washing. Zak downtown. Worked up to his lot. A very cold day. Carmen called a little while for supper. She brought a very good cake. Dorothea called in the evening. No light power till 9 PM. Betty called this p.m. They are busy at the shelter. Got quite a lot done. Bro to school today. Dorothea brought me a Sears catalog.

 

 

 

Tuesday, March 17, 1992

 

St. Patrick’s Day. I done regular work. Billie got ready to go to the doctor for a checkup. Betty and Carmen got ready and left early this morning for school. Only one more week to go. Billie rode over to Norway with Zak.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 18, 1992

 

I ordered my support girdle. Dorothea and Betty to Portland. Dorothea to her dentist. Betty to her eye doctor. I done some odds and end jobs. Zak downtown and Don the shopping. He took Billie later on for his haircut, also they called up to David’s. A nice sunny day. It was good to be here alone. Later in PM Brogan came up.

 

 

 

Thursday, March 19, 1992

 

Cold. I didn’t do much. Watched TV. I did a big washing. Carmen called, Bro sick today, she didn’t come up.
