The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 4 - 7, 1992

 

Saturday, April 4, 1992

 

A nice sunny day. I done regular work. Made out the bills. David came down for coffee. Zak came up for his coffee. Zak working on his lot today. Dorothea came this p.m. Did Billie’s papers. Then got the supper. Carmen, Arnold and Brogan came for a minute. This forenoon Arnold set the squirrel traps. Zak worked on his lot some today.

 

 

 

Sunday, April 5, 1992

 

Partly cloudy, cold and on the windy side. I got the breakfast. Walt up for coffee. I done up the work and wrote to Esther. Jason did some more cleaning up outside.

 

 

 

Monday, April 6, 1992

 

I did a washing. Zak came, he done a lot of work. Cleaned radiators, changed Billie’s bed and we cleaned the bureau draws. Cleaned all underneath the bureaul. Also my desk and my corner cupboard. Betty came, got the supper. Well Zak is all done working here. He did okay while he worked here. Now he is thinking of doing other things. One he is beginning to build him a house. Also wants to buy a motorcycle to go to California. Time will tell. First he should try for a job. I wish him the best of luck always. I love him regardless. Zak all done here tonight working. He began working here last spring.

 

 

 

Tuesday, April 7, 1992 A new bike for Tom

 

Fair day. Windy. I did regular work. Bro and Carmen called. Zak came, he was getting ready to go to Portland. Betty came, got the supper to going. A good roast pork, onions, turnips, shell beans, mashed potatoes, hot biscuits and a good carrot cake. She and Carmen got it. Walt, Arnold and Brogan were here. Kim came for a minute. Tom and Kim came in evening. Tom brought his bike up and put it in the garage. Today Tom and Kim up to Augusta. Tom got a new bike. I’m glad for him. It was cold riding it home, rained from Norway.
