The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Monday, January 13, 1992

 

Cloudy in a.m. It cleared away and was sunny and mild. I cooked a pot roast today and made a cheesecake for supper. Carmen, Betty, Walt and Brogan was here. I worked on the puzzle.

 

 

 

Tuesday, January 14, 1992

 

Cloudy and raining when we got up. No school here, other towns had two-hour delay. Zak cleaned up the whole house. It looks very nice. I worked on puzzle. Heavy rains in p.m. Heavy winds in some places. Kim came up and we finished the puzzle. Zak to his pool game tonight. Carmen got some news which might be quite disturbing. I feel awful.

 

 

 

Wednesday, January 15, 1992

 

A sunny day. I worked on the puzzle. Betty left early this morning for school yet about an hour later she left. Carmen didn’t go. She had a doctors appointment. The baby’s condition??? Dorothea called, she was busy all day. Betty Smith went to see Sadie (her sister). Not very good. She has got to go to Portland today for a checkup at Maine Medical Center.

 

 

 

Thursday, January 16, 1992

 

Today a nice sunny day but awful cold. We finished up the puzzle and getting the other one ready to put together. Carmen and Bro called. Bro stayed here while Carmen went to do errands, gone all forenoon and p.m. Betty didn’t get home until late tonight. Dorothea to the dentist today.
