The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 8 - 11, 1992

 

Sunday, March 8, 1992

 

A cloudy day. I didn’t do much. Zak down to Betty’s all day and downtown in eve. Dorothea came and done Billie’s toenails. I wrote to Esther. Walt up for coffee. Nick came home today for a visit.

 

 

 

Monday, March 9, 1992

 

A quite nice day. I did a big wash. I read some magazines. Zak went with Betty down to Casco Hancock Lumber to get her cupboard units for her shop. Also Zak went somewhere else. Carmen and Bro here for supper, she brought the supper, Salisbury steak and a nice carrot cake. Billie didn’t do anything except his therapy. He was laying down all p.m. I watched the programs.

 

 

 

Tuesday, March 10, 1992

 

A cloudy dreary day. Betty and Carmen at school today. I did regular work and the ironing. About 10 AM company (Brogan) came. She was tired acting. We did a lot of drawing, made newspapers etc. She went home at about 3 PM. Zak gone to Portland to his pool meet. Heavy rain and high winds expected tonight or early tomorrow. Betty and Carmen gone to school today.

 

 

 

Wednesday, March 11, 1992 RAIN RAIN

 

Well it rained very hard all day. Cloudy and very dark. Brogan came about 10. We did a lot of drawing. She told me how to do it etc. She had some Jell-O I made for her. She left with Walt at about 3:30 to go home. She had a problem with Zak. All right before she went home. Carmen and Betty came home at about 7:30. Carmen and Bro came in on their way home. Nothing on TV anymore of anything worth watching.
