The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A nice sunny day. Carmen came, she did the shopping. Brogan to school. Carmen done the work and got the supper. Snow gone a lot today. Well Zak found out he can’t go to school because of not filing a income tax, so now what? Zak got a good supper tonight. Dorothea to the dentist, had her teeth checked. She has got to go back for her permanent ones later.

A kind of cloudy day. I done up regular work, got ready to go to Windham with Betty and Carmen. I did some spring shopping. We got a couple dresses for Brogan. Also Betty and Carmen got some things. Betty to the dentist for her teeth. They look very nice. Walter took her down. These are her permanent ones. I’m glad she has them. Betty Smith got her new glasses today.

Well this morning got up only to see the ground all white and a messy storm. It is so sickening. I washed, ironed. Carmen came and did her hens. What a miserable day. It seemed like two days in one. I done my work. Dorothea came, got the supper. Carmen called. Nick came to Carmen’s today. He isn’t at all good. I don’t know what his outcome will be. He has been over to his aunts in Oxford for a few days. He isn’t any better. Cloudy and dreary all day.

Well another miserable day. The clouds broke today and a dite of sunshine but the ground is all white. I hate it so much. Dorothea got a good supper tonight. Bro was so glad to see her mother. Dorothea cleaned the house all nice today. It looks very much. Betty came up, brought up her scanner. It is interesting. Susan called this p.m. too. She got a call from Penney’s from Conway to come to work Wednesday. Betty took me up to see the layout at her new office. Very nice. Frogs peeping tonight.
