The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, May 19, 1992

 

Well the old sun was shining when I got up this morning. It shined all day. I did regular work. I did the ironing. Zak called for a little while. Betty got her upstairs all done. Carmen pushed all day. Dorothea and Betty gone to Portland. Dorothea teeth, Betty to seeing her brother Robert. Also Betty went to the curtain shop. Susan called tonight, she is going to do my hair Saturday.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 20, 1992

 

Another nice sunny morning, very warm. The leaves are coming out good on the trees. Carmen took Bro to school. Then she went to her doctor. Betty and Carmen have some people up to their shop today. It has been very hot today 80° or better. Well today I cleaned Betty’s silver, I washed my coats.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 21, 1992 Hot 90° used the fan for first time

 

Well it is a hot one today. 90° or better. I done my regular work. Made a Jell-O and a chocolate pudding. Betty’s folks put their chickens outside today for the first time. Brogan loves that kind of work. Carmen to town to do the shopping. Betty is preparing a spaghetti feed for tonight. Fan on for first time. Billie had a big check cashed. Carmen took it down for him.

 

 

 

Friday, May 22, 1992

 

Another very hot hot day 95°. Dorothea came early, she cleaned the house from top to bottom. It looks very nice. She got the lunch. Zak up this morning. He is looking for work. I pity him so much. I wish him the very best always. Carmen and Brogan came early p.m. Bro had a good time on her trip to the lake. Wicked hot. Betty all done cleaning out to her living room. Kim called today. She don’t get up very much. She picked my dandelions, we had some for supper. Froze some for Esther. Also did some more to eat this week. Carmen and Brogan came, went to town, got ice cream cones.
