The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 12 - 15, 1992

Sunday, July 12, 1992

I done up the regular work. Carmen came with the children. While she, Nick And bro went to pick berries for her jam, I looked after the wee one. He was good. I read the papers. Zack came for coffee. Then Betty called looking for some window drapes for Zacks apartment. He moved today to Norway while he is working over there. I’m glad for him and all. Walt up for coffee this morning.

Monday, July 13, 1992

It was cloudy and raining when we got up. It cleared away. Then clouded up and rained very hard again. Soon after the rain stopped. The sun came out, quite hot, soon it cooled off and the wind began to blow. Clear and nice sun. Quite windy. Betty and Dorothea came, they washed the back porch windows. They did a very good job. Also Dorothea took care of the clothes and made my bed. Carmen took Billie to his doctor for his checkup. Then Betty had to go for her appointment. Young Cameron looked so perfect, also his sister Brogan looks so attractive in her new shirt.

Tuesday, July 14, 1992 RAIN RAIN

When we got up it was fair, but later it clouded up and rained. It rained very hard all p.m. Jason came and painted the porch ceiling. I  done regular work. Betty came, washed windows, swept, dusted and done some other odd jobs. We had a beef soup for supper. We had the table and chairs moved up here from the back porch. They look very nice. Carmen, Bro and Cameron called. She left the baby here.

Wednesday, July 15, 1992 Mama’s 112 birthday

On July 15, 1880 a little girl was born. Dr. Coolidge was called in from East Stoneham to West Stoneham. Aunt All was the attending nurse. As that was his duty in all births, called midwife.

No sun today until late p.m. We have had such a miserable week all cold and dark. I cleaned out my stove this morning. I did a washing also a few other jobs. Dorothea and Betty left to go to Portland early this morning. Dorothea went her dentist. Betty went to buy a picture for her living room. Carmen came and got supper tonight. Betty been busy all day. Esther and Cliff up to Brud and Verna’s for a few days. I watched the convention last night, also will tonight.
