The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 7 - 10, 1992

Well, after a lot of thick heavy fog this morning it cleared out and the sun came out and 80° temps. I wrote to Esther. Zak came up and had coffee. Walt up early this morning for coffee. After Billie got his therapy work done, he went out and mowed lawns. I cleared up the mess on back porch, wet towels, we put down where the ceiling leaked. What a mess, got to have it fixed. Carmen up for a minute.

Today I went down to Betty’s with the help of Betty, Carmen and Zac. I got up to the Heritage Room. I love it up there. It is a dream world to me. I’m so glad. Well I got down okay too. Betty came and got the supper. We lost our electric power from 5 to 9. So Betty and Walt cooked hamburgers outside. Betty and I looked over a couple boxes, cans out on the back porch.

A nice sunny day. The wind blowing hard. I done regular work. Then I checked some papers over I had saved. Carmen came, got the store list, done the shopping. Got the supper, done the dishes. She looks so pooped and very uncomfortable. Dorothea came tonight, done Billie’s paperwork.
