The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, July 5, 1992

Another miserable day. Cloudy, on the coolish side. I wrote to Esther and I wrote in my diary. Zack up for coffee this morning. Walt didn’t come up, sick this morning. They get home from the gathering at the camp early in p.m. They moved turkeys, chicks etc. Arnold worked in the garden for a little while. Walt don’t feel very well today. Anxiety and worry. Had bad shower tonight, heavy rain and wind. Carmen called with the children. I kept Cameron for an hour or so.

Monday, July 6, 1992 Nice day.

A nice day. I done up the work. Had bad showers last night. Porch did not leak. I got my mail off today. Late this forenoon Carmen and kids came. Zack to work again today. Betty came and cleaned up the house, got the supper. Cleaned up. Last night Jeff had a very wild boat ride from Naples to Harrison. He was in Naples to the fireworks and he got quite upset and he was brought up to Bridgton that he went back and was told he couldn’t get back on his boat which he did. On the trip up here from Naples bad bad thundershowers, heavy rain and lightning. It was no wonder he ever made it. It was awful on Dorothea. It was awful to think he could have been killed.

A beautiful sunny morning. I begun up the work, beds etc. Then I did the washing. Didn’t do much. Cameron was up today, he was quite good, in late p.m. he got kind of fuzzy, wet and hungry. His granny came and took charge. Betty up to the house of business getting ready for the open house tomorrow. A good day. Betty and Dorothy were out looking for Jeff because he came up from Naples in the boat, a very bad storm. The dogs were very frightened. I’m so thankful he is all right. They left and went looking for him late last night. It was about three this morning when they met him in Harrison.
