The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 21 - 23, 1989 Thanksgiving Day

Tuesday, November 21, 1989

Well on the whole a miserable day, cloudy, snow and high winds. Cold, very. The electric power went off at about 7:30. It didn’t come back on until 11:30. It has been a very bad day. Carmen and Brogan came and Zak. Carmen and Kim and Brogan down to Betty’s to keep warm. As I was getting ready to go down to Betty’s to sit in the warmth of the open stove hearth the power came back on. I hope this weather don’t come too often this winter. Betty and Zak to Norway to grocery shop. Also Carmen went and did mine. It’s too bad to have to be such a bother to people. Brogan stayed here for a nap.

A beautiful day after the mess yesterday. Snow is all over today. I hope we don’t see too much this winter. I made two pies, lemon sponge and a custard. Carmen here today and Brogan. Billie didn’t do much today. Regular work. We watch soaps in PM.

Thursday, November 23, 1989 Thanksgiving day, GOOD DINNER

I got up and got my ironing done. Done regular work. Took a bath, got ready, went down to Betty’s for dinner. I watched some of the parade. Went down to Betty’s at about 10:30. Those girls was rushing right around and very efficiently. Got a very good dinner. It all turkey, stuffing and all was so good. The Horton family, Billie, Betty Smith and I were the only ones there. We looked at snaps and a box of Milan’s papers which were very interesting. He was a smart man. Very proud of him.
