The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, December 14, 1989 Got Christmas tree in

A very cold day again. I done regular work, made a pudding. George up for breakfast and the day. Carmen over to Lewiston shopping for Betty. Then Zak brought up from the woods a tree and they all came in evening and decorated it. Betty H, Dorothea, Betty S, Zack and Brogan. It is a beautiful tree. Perfect shape. He got it down in the woods. Betty goes to Dr. for a check on her condition tomorrow. She has to see someone else. Carmen here and got supper for us. A very good fish supper. She makes the best meals.

Friday, December 15, 1989 Kim on a date, BETTY to hospital.

Betty goes for her checkup today. A real nice day. I wrote to Esther, done regular work, washed. Carmen and Brogan came, did the cleaning. She also took care of the fruit and distributed it and the gifts for me. She did some errands downtown. What would we do if she didn’t do all of these things. George went to town with her. Also Betty Smith. Betty and Walt to the doctor. It may not be heart problem. I hope not. She goes to Lewiston hospital again Tuesday. Kim out on a date tonight with a friend Tom Harriman. A town cop. A Christmas party. The girls was at Betty’s tonight.

A bad snow storm. David came for coffee and donuts. George came up for breakfast and here for the day. Betty called this p.m. late. Jason came and shoveled. Steve Lyons came and did the plowing. We didn’t see kids or hair of Carmen and Brogan all day. I washed. I did Billie’s calendar. Not much else today. Betty brought up brown bread for supper. Very good. Kim worked today. Zack down to Betty’s for supper.
