The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A very nice mild day and sunny. I been busy all day getting ready for supper. George and I. Also out to lunch with Jack and Sylvia, up to New Hampshire. A very nice fish dinner. It was very nice of them to ask us out. It pleased me very much. Hope to visit with them again. Betty expected to come home today but her incision began to bleed and she can’t come. She is better which we are very pleased. Hope she don’t still have problems. Tonight I had a pot roast supper, it was very good. I made a hot mince pie and baked bread. Walt, Zack, George, Carmen and Brogan here. Carmen did the work.

Wednesday, January 10, 1990 BETTY HOME, Foggy

Walt up early and off to Portland to get Betty. Carmen to her dentist in South Portland to get her teeth worked on. It became awful foggy today. George got up here early this morning. Betty and Walt got home early. Carmen got back a little after 11 AM. Zak up for breakfast. Kim and Tom came up for lunch. We enjoyed Tom very much, he seems to be such a nice guy. He works for the Bridgton Police Department. He and Kim enjoy each other very much. It has been a foggy day. We watched TV soaps. It seems good to have Betty drop in.

Cloudy and rainy. I didn’t do much. I got some more of the reading done. I cooked a chicken breast for supper. George went to town with Carmen and Betty Smith, also Brogan went. Betty is having heart problems again, too much for her to cope with.
