The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Kim came up, she made the date filled pie. George and Betty to the Ridge House. Billie said it want too bad out to the barn. Dorothea called for a little while. Walt up for coffee this morning. It don’t seem like Sunday. Tom and Charlene called and saw the tree and wished us happy holiday. Tonight Billie’s cattle went. Unable to care for them. Tonight we all went down to Betty Smith’s for her Christmas. She got a lot of nice gifts. She was pleased, we had a nice evening.

Monday, December 25, 1989 FIRST CHRISTMAS AT THE RIDGE HOUSE, A Good One

Well up early this morning. Rushed around, got work done up etc. Went up to the brand-new Ridge Home. Carmen, Kim, Zack and Brogan entertained us royally at their new home. A very nice dinner. Also it was so much fun when we watch them open their gifts. Carmen and Brogan then to Kim’s home where she was joined by brother Zack and we also enjoyed them very much opening all the nice gifts. Very useful and nice. After enjoying a most bountiful and delicious turkey dinner, we all traveled down to the Horton, Walt and Betty and George there too was another loaded tree with so many nice useful gifts. Then up to the Crook house where there was another overloaded tree. So many nice things and a brand-new TV and candy by the barrel full. They cleaned the tree off and cleaned up the whole place. Jeff got up for Christmas also. He brought everyone candy. Also Betty Smith and Tom Harriman joined in with us all.

Well cloudy when we got up. It cleared away at about noon. I been doing odd jobs. Carmen called, she had been over and got Brogan. She stayed with her father last night and forenoon for Christmas. Carmen is tired. Kim back to work today. Carmen bushed. Brogan came home today from her father’s and grandparents over in Lewiston. George up all day, he went down to the bank and got his money. Dot came today. Lorraine brought her up. She looks older now. We was glad to see her.
