The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, December 27, 1989

 

A very nice sunny day. I wrote to Esther. I washed. Carmen and Brogan called and Betty. Zack in late PM. Carmen and George down town and did the shopping. Milton McKeen died last night suddenly.

I done regular work. Carmen came, she did the shopping. I got caught up on paper reading.

 

 

 

Friday, December 29, 1989

 

A nice day. Carmen came and did the cleaning. She went to Portland. She got the cabinet for the new TV. It is nice. We are very pleased with the new TV. Tonight Zak came up and put the TV table together. He was here for supper. Betty called. Also Dorothea called and got George and took him to work with her then he was up there for supper.

 

 

 

Saturday, December 30, 1989 Bill’s 81st birthday

 

It was kind of cloudy and a lot of sunshine. I done up regular work. I washed and ironed. I got all the papers read. Zak here this morning. Also Walt called, he and George went to North Windham. George got the US coins he wanted. David came and had coffee and visited. This (Bill) would have been 81 years today. We think of you often. Brogan and Carmen didn’t call today.
