The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 17 - 20, 1989

 

Sunday, December 17, 1989

 

A nice sunny. It was kind of mild during the day. I done regular. Betty called, she brought up some papers for me to read, which had been written 167 years ago. Later in forenoon Zak came, he had coffee etc. In PM David and Dorothea came, brought gifts. Visited a little while. Also Carmen and Brogan came. They had made cookies. George went down to clean up his house in PM. Betty and Charlene out antiquing. Carmen got her phone hooked up today.

 

 

 

Monday, December 18, 1989

 

A quite nice mild day. I did my washing and the ironing. I also did some other odd jobs. Carmen to North Windham shopping. Billie and George over to Fryeburg to Dr. Goldenhar. Had car trouble. Kim out on a date. Betty S having leaking roof problems and down cellar. Man came and shoveled her roof. Plumber didn’t come. Trouble in Panama.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 19, 1989

 

A very nice day. I did some jobs I wanted to get done. I made and wrapped fudge for David and Jeff. Carmen up and Brogan. Betty and George down doing the shopping. Billie didn’t do much today. Kim called also Betty came. George here for breakfast and lunch. Brogan here with Carmen, they had supper with us. I had a roast beef supper. Carmen did the work. Very good. Still trouble in Panama. Sue and Monica called late in PM, brought some gifts and cards.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 20, 1989

 

It said snow but it didn’t. Billie and George down to Betty’s for spaghetti supper. We are busy, that is Carmen, Dorothea, Betty, Brogan and Kim all shopping for Christmas in the big times ahead. Brogan is so cute.
