The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Zack gone to the training tonight over to Norway. Walt took him over. David came for coffee. I made rolls and tarts.

 

 



 

Sunday, December 3, 1989 Plowed for first time

 

A nice sunny day after the bad storm of last night. About 12 to 14 inches of snow. It has been kind of warm all day until PM. It got kind of windy. They plowed snow today in the yard for first time. A new guy to plow, Steve Lyons. I been working on the Christmas cards today all day. Jason came and done the hand shoveling. Betty, Dorothea and Carmen gone shopping antiques. Walt and Zack up for breakfast and coffee.

 

 

 

Monday, December 4, 1989

 

A very cold windy day. I got my work done up. I worked at the desk. Carmen and Brogan came. Carmen did the cleaning, it looked very nice. Billie didn’t do much, he done some odd jobs. Betty up in evening and put the decorations up, fixed my chair. Carmen to bank for Billie and me. She is right out straight. We about run her ragged. Kim called a minute.

 

 

 

Tuesday, December 5, 1989 Perm, Billie to Dr. Petrone

 

A very nice day, no wind. Very cold early morning. It warmed up and the temperature became milder during the day. I got up early and done work, took a bath, got ready. Went to get my hair done. Carmen came and took me, she also done the grocery shopping. Billie rode down to the hospital with Kim this PM. I mean to the doctors. His hands are bad, got to have a operation on them. He got to go to the Dr. tomorrow for brain scan.
