The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 17 - 20, 1973

Saturday, March 17, 1973 RAIN

It began raining in the night. It rained very hard all day. What a miserable day. Billie was so uneasy. I did regular work. I made a orange pudding. In late p.m. Esther and Dorothea and Betty and Walt called. Esther down to Betty’s for supper. Dorothea up here. Betty and Dorothea down to hospital after supper. Jean was about the same. Zak don’t feel too good.

Sunday, March 18, 1973 Zak better

This morning Betty called and said Zak’s fever seem to have broken, he felt better. Another dreary day, but not raining. Cloudy, cold and snow flurries. Billie down to Lawrence, he and Keith over to South Harrison. He went up to Chet’s and helped to take care of the dog that died. It was so bad it made him sick. No one here all day.

Monday, March 19, 1973

I got my wash done early supposing we are going to Norway. Got down to Betty’s and she was all upset. Kim had got her boots wet and couldn’t go to school. But Betty put some other ones on her and took her. So we went to Norway. Bill and I called at hospital to see Jean. She wasn’t very good, talks some. Gordon, Sal called, they are quite upset about the situation.

Tuesday, March 20, 1973

Up early, got work done up. Betty, Fern, Esther, Zak and I down to Dorothea’s and she and Shawn went with us up to Joy’s. We looked at some snapshots, had a very good time. Got home early. Stan called to tell us Jean is being moved to Hicks Nursing Home in Fryeburg. Sal left and went to Vickie’s today at Virginia.
