The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 19 - 22, 1973


Monday, February 19, 1973

It was a very nice day, mild. I did a big wash. They dried good. Betty, Walt and Kim and Zak gone down to Dorothea’s. Carmen came up in PM, also Lloyd. Billie worked. I did some desk work.



Tuesday, February 20, 1973

Kind of cloudy but mild. Betty, Kim and Zak and I went to Portland. Out to the Maine Mall. Got home very early. I didn’t do any shopping. Stopped at Dawn’s on the way down. Kim and Zak had a good time, called to see Walt a minute. Carmen stayed with Bill. Lisa Smart’s horse died today.



Wednesday, February 21, 1973 Kimberly got haircut

Cloudy. I ironed. Kimberly went and got her hair cut. I went with her. She looks so very neat and nice. Joy called at Betty’s. Kim came up here and spent the day. In evening I with Betty called at Ferns. Billie Deming gone up to Brud and Verna’s today for a few days visit. Susan and children up to Esther’s.



Thursday, February 22, 1973

Cloudy, dreary day. Mild. I done regular work. Called at Betty’s a few minutes. Bill down to Jean’s a little while. I did a little washing. I fixed Kimmy’s hat. I talked with Esther a little while. In evening I called at Ferns.
