The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 13 - 16, 1973


Saturday, January 13, 1973

Another nice day. I done up regular work. Lloyd called, he and Cliff for the rubbish. I made a apple pie, it boiled over. I made a chocolate cake and rolls. They were good. Bill out this morning, down to Gordon’s etc. Billie down town and to Lawrence’s. Walt called in PM. I shampooed my hair and put the rinse on. Betty curled it with her curler etc. It looks very good after she got through. In evening Betty and family, Bill and I, Fern and Lloyd, Susan and Vince were over to Esther’s for a birthday and going away gathering for Cliff. He leaves for Florida Monday.



Sunday, January 14, 1973 To movie Jonnico

Cloudy when we got up but it is milder. A pretty nice day, it became sunny and mild. I done up regular work. I did a dite of washing, got ready. Carmen, Kim, Betty and I went to Westbrook to see the movie Jonnico. A little Alaskan boy. A very good show. We heard Milan is in the hospital. Strepped sore throat and his asthma condition is bad.



Monday, January 15, 1973 Cliff left for Florida again

A nice mild day and sunny. Up early, got the work done. Went down to Betty’s. She, Zak and I went to Portland to the Maine Mall in South Portland to shop. Grocery shopping etc. Saw Dorothea. She is okay now. David became a union member yesterday she said. This morning Cliff left to go to Florida for a six-week visit. Cliff will stay at Brud and Verna’s tonight.



Tuesday, January 16, 1973

A very nice sunny day. It was mild and a nice drying day. I washed, clothes all dried very good. I worked on my scraps. Betty and Zak called. Betty called at Bonnie’s today.
