The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 31 - November 3, 1965



Sunday, October 31, 1965 HEIFER CAME

Mike called again. Cloudy and showers in a.m. Bill and Bobby cleaned up the spring. We had Italian sandwiches for supper. David called. Kennie and Dot. Later Fern, Lloyd called, had some gingerbread and whipped cream. Bill and I called at Dot and Clyde Smalls.



Monday, November 1, 1965 Cold Windy

A very cold day. Washed, churned, to town. Betty cleaned up the house. Fern and Lloyd called. A busy day. Carmen still better except that uneven temperature. Billie back to work today after being sick with a bad cold. Betty all better. Had a good roast pork supper.



Tuesday, November 2, 1965

Carmen came home again today from the hospital. She was real good. She soon begun to sneeze and cough. She was so pleased to be home. Fern here for supper. Sold 57 Ford.



Wednesday, November 3, 1965 Shoes

A nice day, not too cold. Betty and I took Carmen to the clinic at Portland. Gone all day. I got me a pair of new shoes. Carmen pretty good today. Called at Ferns in the evening. Billie worked at Lawrence’s.
