The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 28 - December 1, 1965 Bill to Lahey Clinic



Sunday, November 28, 1965

Carmen down to the hospital again. Had shots etc. and returned home. She is a bit better tonight. I hope she sleeps much better than last night. Billie back to work tonight. Fern, Lloyd called, Kennie and Dot. Had to have Dr. Richards for Carmen in evening. She is so sick. Bill is sick with his lameness.



Monday, November 29, 1965

A nice fair day. Carmen sick all day with asthma. Bill quite sick and lame. Betty to town. She took her car down to Bill Burnell’s and put up for sale. Randy Harmon called.



Tuesday, November 30, 1965

A good day. I churned, went over to June’s. Got my clothes in, done the ironing in evening. Bill very lame and so bad it was decided I will go to Boston with him tomorrow. Fern and Lloyd called today. I made a turkey pie.



Wednesday, December 1, 1965 BILL TO LAHEY CLINIC

A nice day but cold and crisp. Bill and I off to Boston to the Lahey Clinic. Billie took us to Portland to meet the bus. Bill had a very hard day. He was very lame and sick. Dr. Bartell said his condition was very bad. He gave him a very thorough examination. We got out and back to the bus station at 2:00, left Boston at 3:30, arrived in Portland at 10 of 6:00. Fern, Betty and Carmen met us. We called to see Billie on the way home. Mrs. Hansen up here to babysit. Fern up here all night. LLOYD ENTERED HOSPITAL.
