The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 22 -25, 1965 MERRY CHRISTMAS



Wednesday, December 22, 1965

A nice day, not too cold. Bill sent for his license. Betty up and took me to town. She had company last night, her husband Mike. I cleaned up the house, did a dite of cooking. Sarah called. I did a dite of Christmas shopping. Made fudge. Wrapped bacon. Billie got a $48 Christmas bonus and Turkey.



Thursday, December 23, 1965

A nice day, warm. Billie, Betty, Carmen and I all went to Norway and done our Christmas shopping. Billie bought us a new TV today for Christmas. We came home, had supper. Betty and Carmen back home. I was busy all evening putting on a few finishing touches, wrapping gifts etc. Bill and I enjoyed the new TV.



Friday, December 24, 1965

Busy all day. Betty and Carmen here all day and night, we worked. Betty cleaned the whole house, wrapped gifts. Made the corn balls. I did the cooking, went to town. Holly here. Betty and Carmen down town after supper for a little while. After she came back and Carmen went to bed she got rest of Carmen’s things on. It is a beautiful tree tonight and brings back memories.



Saturday, December 25, 1965

Cloudy and foggy and rain. Fern and Lloyd and Bob here for dinner. Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis here in a.m. Kennard, Delores, Kennie, Dot here in p.m. We had a lot of nice gifts. Carmen made the day complete. She had a lot and a lot of toys. And many nice clothes. She was very cute. Dinner was turkey, mashed potatoes, turnip, sweet potato, onions, peas, celery, pickles, Jell-O salad. Hot rolls, custard pie, apple pie, whipped cream cake, chocolate cake, ice cream. Talked on phone with Joy, Es, Susan and Billie.
