The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 10 - 13, 1965 Bill back to Boston



Friday, December 10, 1965

A nice day, on the cold side. Bill had a tooth out. He isn’t at all good. I done up my regular work. Betty to town and over to Aunt Ava’s. In p.m. we, Betty and I over to Norway Bank. Bill got two checks today. We bought Jeff’s gifts. I got the groceries. Sent a bit of an order to Sears. Betty down to see her apartment again. A guy looking at the car.



Saturday, December 11, 1965

Gordon and Sal called in eve. A fair day, I done up regular work. Did a dite of cooking. We got the Christmas tree. Also got one for Fern and Aunt Ava. Lloyd and Fern called. Holly and children called. I washed up the floors. Betty out with Randy in evening. Bill not too good at all. Billie worked for Lawrence.



Sunday, December 12, 1965

Cloudy day. Betty, Carmen and I went down to see the apartment. Betty made cookies. Kennie, Dot and Karen called. Carmen and Betty down town after supper. Bill not too good. Betty sold FORD. DAISY BRED



Monday, December 13, 1965 Bad Storm

Bill back to Boston to see Dr. Bartell. Jean went with him. They didn’t get back until awful late. I did a small wash. Betty and Fern took rest of it down to laundry. A very bad storm, some snow first then turned to rain and sleet. Bill got the new medicine for gout. I sent packages off to Jeff. Bill very bad. I feel sorry for him.
